A tale of modern day England from the BBC – whilst reading have a think to yourself of the costs involved here :

A two-year-old boy fell into an eight-foot (2.4m) deep hole which suddenly opened up in the garden of his family’s south Derbyshire home.

At 0945 BST, fire crews went to Newhall near Swadlincote to free the boy’s father, who got trapped after jumping in to rescue his son. Both were unhurt.

The brigade said the hole, thought to be an old mine shaft, was about six-feet (1.8m) wide.

The Coal Authority has been informed and is now dealing with the incident.

Fire crews used a ladder to rescue the man and both he and his son were checked over by ambulance service staff.

The Coal Authority sent mine rescue staff and a fencing crew to make the area safe.

Swadlincote is a former coal mining town and past industries there include brick-making and the manufacture of clay products.

So a hole appears in a garden and the little kiddy falls in. The hole itself is not really deep at around 8 feet and is not particularly narrow either at around 6 feet across.

Desperate father jumps in without thinking to rescue his poor ikkle darling and then cannot get out again. Someone, I assume wife/partner/au pair, then calls 999 instead of finding a ladder or even helping them out by hand.

This is where it gets expensive as we have Fire Crews (yes plural), ambulance people, mine rescue people and a “mine fencing crew” all turning up to someone stuck down a hole in their garden.

Typical really these days where people call 999 at the slightest inconvenience and expect them to sort out whatever has happened as there is Zero personal responsibility or self reliance left it would seem.

A great result for our nanny state overlords who have managed to reduce the majority of the population to helpless unthinking automatons.

Lets just hope there isn’t a real national disaster or we really will be fucked.
