Snow 1963 – how to clear a railway line in style

Spotted in a link over at Small Dead Animals (to your right in the blogroll), the short film below entitled Snow by Geoffrey Jones documents some of the efforts made to keep the railways running in the winter of 1963.

Hand digging of 20 foot snowdrifts is one thing but wait until you see the snowplough train – it looks to me like it should have Nazis hanging off the side and a 12 inch gun on the back – in other words it looks more like a war engine.

At around 2:06 in the film it gives an impressive demonstration of how to remove a 10 foot snowdrift at speed – I’m sure the engine driver and stoker were bracing themselves before they hit those.
