Minimum alcohol pricing by the back door?

A brilliant way of setting a minimum price for alcohol via The Telegraph :

Drink strength cut in alcohol “pact” to tackle bingeing epidemic

The alcoholic strength of one of Britain’s bestselling drinks is to be cut by up to a quarter as part of a Government “pact” with supermarkets and the drink industry.

Heineken announcing this week that it is reducing the strength of “a leading brand” – thought to be the cider Strongbow – by 1pc alcohol by volume, from 5.3pc to 4.3pc as “just the start” of attempts to lower the alcoholic content of its drinks

Less alcohol in the drink and doubtless the same price for the poor consumer – a brilliant way around not being able to set a minimum price per unit directly.

The industry will love this voluntary “pact” and I am sure there will be plenty more to follow when they see how it will help their bottom line.

The government must think we are all completely fucking stupid to accept this sleight of hand, never mind the wide ranging raft of less salt, less fat and less alcohol that comes with it.

There is also this insideous nudging crap that will come under the corporate social responsibility banner whereby we get lectured at work :

They will also pledge to help their employees lead healthier lifestyles. A new website will allow consumers to check how different companies are performing and it is likely they will be obliged to report each year on progress. “We want to set up a competitive environment where companies can prove what they are doing, a race to the top,” said one source close to the negotiations.

Different masters, same dead hand of bansturbatory nanny statism.
