Police providing roadblocks for ‘celebrities’!

Occasionally you come across an article that makes you wonder how on earth this country hasn’t already disappeared up its own arsehole.

Today, said article is in The Telegraph relaying a tale of police providing a rolling road block to allow some so-called celebrity to zoom off in their range rover :

Katie Price given police escort at taxpayers’ expense

A decision by Surrey Police to provide Katie Price, a former glamour model, with a “rolling roadblock” escort on the M25 to help her avoid photographers has been criticised by road users.

In a short video of the incident posted on YouTube, a police car can be seen holding back traffic behind Ms Price’s silver Range Rover as it speeds away.

A scrolling message in the police vehicle’s rear window reads “Rolling road block, hold back”, as traffic on the M25 was reportedly slowed to 50mph to assist the 32-year-old.

An official complaint about the incident was made to Surrey Police on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the force insisted that the officer who created the roadblock had done the right thing.

“We support the officer and there is no case to answer,” he said.

“There was a call made regarding a convoy of vehicles. That officer took stock of the situation and decided to intervene,” he added.

Ms Price, who recently announced she was divorcing husband Alex Reid, is not known for being camera shy.

The former glamour model has released four autobiographies and starred in six reality TV shows about her private life.

Fuck me pink (as the saying goes around these parts)!

How far into the cesspit has this country sunk already?

There is even a video of the incident just to show how rediculous this actually was :

woodsy – aware, responsive and helpful is definitely what the police should be but I am not sure any of that actually applies here.

Whilst I can only comment on what I can see in the video, it does look rather strange. The opening shots have a queue of cars behind and just the Range Rover on its own in front. Was the Range Rover being driven slowly causing the tailback? Were there really a horde of papparazzi blocking the road?

I would imagine that a policeman coming across this situation blind would have pulled the Range Rover over to find out why they were driving like a dick on a motorway.

The fact that he moves to the front of the queue and then creates a roadblock to allow the Range Rover to escape suggests to me that someone in the car had requested help from the police and duly received it.

As for being harrassed – they don’t mind (and actively seek) the publicity when they are flogging a new book/record/film but then complain like whining pigs when they can’t turn the attention off again.

Actually I have mixed feelings here. I’m no fan of Ms Price but can see the point if she was being harrassed by photographers, the situation puts other motorist’s safety at risk.
Thinking back years ago a colleague was stopped by police, on discovering he was transporting a very pregnant wife to the maternity hospital they gave him an escort.
Seems to me that pandering to celebrity is wrong, but being aware, responsive and helpful to all members of society is exactly what the police should be doing?

Furor – I wouldn’t be too surprised to see the priority lanes installed for the Olympic Games being retained for that sort of thing.

As for the video, how long before some cash strapped, Police Authority wonk decides to hire out police protection services to ‘celebs’. It would be a nice little earner for the police and would fit in well with the UK tabloid obsession for elevating third rate talent to regal status.

For me, the whole celebrity culture explains a lot about this countries woes and dismal outlook in general. When some pneumatic chested, non-entity gets more public and media attention than our country being handed over piecemeal to the EU then what hope is there?

So, when are you getting the “third, center lane” put in so the politbüro, and chosen friends can get to G.U.M without delay?

Actually, I think we’re already past the rectum and setting course for the lower colon…

Good point on the minger front.

It was her sister driving apparently.

I thought she had lost her licence?

Her driving licence, that is, not the one allowing her to be a complete minger….
